EEYM Vienna 2016/2017
2nd Eurepean Eummanuel Youth Meeting
29 December 2016 - 01 January 2017
What and why?
Emmanuel Community is present in 20 European countries where over 2500 members speak at least 15 different languages. It is difficult to count all the cultural backgrounds and impossible to get to know every personal story. Nevertheless, we all have one thing in common: when encountering Emmanuel - God among us - we didn’t just discover the unstoppable joy but also our place in the Church. Among those many of us are young and we also share our aspirations.
After having the very 1st European meeting in Brussels almost 2 years ago we met again, this time in Vienna. The Austrian brothers and sisters were willing to take the main burden of the event although they were not the only ones. We set an international team of 7 young people from different countries and fr. Arkadiusz Czempik as the coordinator.
We gathered in Vienna to discover anew our joy of knowing Jesus Emmanuel and to let ourselves be enriched by brothers and sisters from our continent. We have no other way but to choose to collaborate in all diversity.
Most of the program was held in the church of St. Florian (yes, sometimes it was quite cold) where f. Martin Sinnhuber and f. Alfons Pachta have been based not so long in order to work on a mission in the city of Vienna. The meeting gathered 170 young participants out of whom a little more than a half were members of the Community. It is only to say how attracted the youth was and how much they wanted to continue the spirit of the WYD. The ESM Rome and Altötting were present as well as the boys who live in St. Josep’s house in Namur. In total, young people from 22 countries were present.
The meeting wanted to underline Emmanuel as a family. We wanted to give the youth the experience of the beauty and joy of being one same family of beloved children of God. After the event, we can confirm that it was not only our desire but a reality which we have experienced. It was not a self-centered event thou: the visit of the cardinal Christoph Schönborn might have been the highlight of the whole meeting. In a talk with Otto Neubauer (and other members of the Figlhaus team) and exposing his own experiences, it was an incredible testimony of the missionary Church in the contemporary society. We also took time for a pilgrimage to Kahlenberg with St. Josep’s church - that day was probably the most beautiful of the whole winter - and for the street mission where we offered coffee to God.
The EEYM was a gift from Emmanuel. Held right in the heart of Christmas time it was a pure experience of joy and fraternity. Being so international it revealed many participants - as the numerous feedback emails say - the universal face of the Community. We pray that this experience contributes to the greater missionary zeal of the participants as they have come back to their local lives.
Testimonies of youth participants
"Every day was getting better, if I exclude low temperatures, however it's winter I guess. Surprisingly, how tired I am but with a lot of good memories and songs still going through my head. I won't forget this new year in any case because it was something special.
First of all, the midnight mass. Without looking at the fireworks and counting down, we stepped into the new year with the mass, what was a new experience for me, actually the first like this, and I liked it. It was kind of magical. Definitely one of the most beautiful masses I have ever participated in.
Secondly, Otto’s speech about cardinal and the man who's name I have already forgotten has an echo in my mind. I think this is one of the significant testimonies which have deepened my faith. You know, yes, you believe, but there’s a time in life when questions just start pouring out of you about everything; the time when you are searching, thinking … It also made me see even more and confirmed how important is to love, to be good, to have faith and not to judge.
Moreover, during the adoration before Eucharist Mass, when Anna sang that beauuutiful song (about shattered heart I think), there was something going on in me … Like a bubble without worries, peace, love, beauty of everything and everyone around you … then you realize how it is in your real life and that there will be less of these feelings when you'll come back. "
"It was for me a very special moment to get to know the international aspect of the Community as I couldn't join it during the WYD in Krakow. Many things touched me during this short week, but if I should only keep one, it would be that I really enjoyed all free time we had to speak with my brothers and sisters and to discover so many different powerful ways how Jesus works into each one's life.
Thanks again for your great work, everything was really nicely done and my only regret is that it is over!"
"I didn’t have any concrete expectations from this meeting. I just knew that will be good because every Emmanuel Youth meeting is great occasion to pray a lot, meet friends (brothers and sisters) from other countries and praise God in the international society.
I really enjoyed Mercy Evening - it was so, so big experience of God's Love for me and it went by too fast. ;) I'm also very grateful for possibility to offer past and next year to God and for fraternal prayer. Last special moment which I want to place here is praise on Kahlenberg - it was great idea to have praise before beautiful view of Vienna! The worst thing was cold church but I understand that we didn't have influence on that. ;)
Thank you for this meeting. I'm happy that I could help in music service."
"The end of the year is always a good opportunity to think about the events of the past year, and to decide where to go next, what do you want to change regarding the next one, how to reset your compass towards God.
Thanks for the organisers who made it possible to have this excellent retreat in Vienna! And although sitting in a church was sometimes a freezing experience, we met some really nice people, the adorations and praises were great, and the lectures were interesting. I could have done without the mission part, because personally I wasn't in the mood, and I don't think we had enough preparation for it, but all in all, I really enjoyed it!"
"EEYM 2016-2017 Vienna was one of the experiences that I will never forget as long as I live.. An experience that got me thinking about a lot from a completely different perspective.. It was the first time ever for me to live Evangelization not just in concept but most importantly in practice since it is prohibited to do so publicly in Egypt.. just the simplicity in offering little to random people and to see how God could work.. how every simple prayer written by a passerby in the train station was transformed into an intention we all were offering on New Years eve mass..
It was amazing to meet with the Bishop of Vienna who is one of the most humble people I have ever met.. from the stories about sharing his home with people who not only needed in one way or another.. to the experiences he told us about regarding judging others without knowing their backgrounds which i personally do all the time.. and how amazing just trying to live with the question "what would Jesus do now" could take you to places to tell an amazing testimony on public TV.. not forgetting his teachings about not placing ourselves away from the rest.. that there is no we and them.. its all us sinners on one side and God on the other.. and how we are tempted to try and prove and know answers to all what we believe in when we don't need to..
Needless to mention the long walk to Kahlenberg and the self preparation for a new year that was starting hours after.. and the beautiful praise time from the top of the mountain facing the amazing view of Vienna.. finally, it was so touching for me to spend New Years for the first time ever in my life not in a party, but in church.. and the opportunity of praising God on my guitar - the best way i know how to praise - exactly at midnight.. IN ARABIC !!
Entering a whole new year praising in the first couple of minutes in it.. and of course the happiness that was shared between all the members and priests dancing and praying in joy around the alter as soon as the mass ended..
Thanks a lot for this EEYM.. This would not have happened without the help of father Janez E. Rus and the team behind the forum.. and the amazing choir led by Klára Kalčíková (if i correctly understood that she was the one in charge of the choir :) ) and the beautiful voices and instrument players.. I thank everyone that helped make this event possible.. Happy New Year and God bless you all."
¨Dear young people, we didn’t come into this work to vegetate. Jesus is the Lord of
risk. Following Him demands a good dose of courage, a readiness to trade in the sofa for a pair of walking shoes and to blaze trails that open up new horizons.¨
